An ATS-friendly resume is one formatted so applicant tracking software can read every section correctly, and written so a recruiter can find it in a keyword search.

Friendly is the wrong word, in a way. You are not being polite to a machine. You are making sure the applicant tracking system can do two specific things with your resume. Miss either one and good experience gets buried.

It has to do two things

First, the parser has to read it. The software breaks your resume into fields, and if your layout confuses it, your information lands in the wrong place or vanishes. Second, the recruiter has to find it, which comes down to whether your language matches what they search for. Parseable and findable. Everything below serves one of those two.

Formatting that keeps it readable

Single column. Multi column layouts get read in the wrong order. Standard section headings like Experience, Education, and Skills, because the parser looks for those exact labels. No tables, text boxes, or graphics for anything that matters, since the parser cannot reliably read inside them. No text baked into an image, which is invisible to the software. Standard fonts. Real text dates, not icons. The goal is boring, clean, and machine readable.

Language that makes it findable

A clean layout gets you parsed. Matching vocabulary gets you found. Use the keywords the posting uses, in the posting's own words, wherever they actually fit your experience. The clever synonym you prefer is not what the recruiter typed into the search box.

The file format question

People agonize over docx versus PDF. Modern systems read both fine, as long as the PDF is real text and not a scanned image. A clean .docx is the safest default if a posting does not specify. What actually breaks parsing is not the extension, it is the fancy layout inside the file.

How to verify it works

Do not eyeball it. Build the resume on a clean layout, then run it against a real posting to get a match score and a missing keyword list. The free ATS resume builder walks through the exact structure if you are starting from scratch.
