A resume match score is a number, usually out of 100, that estimates how closely your resume matches a specific job description, based mostly on overlapping keywords and phrases.
It is a quick read on one question: if a recruiter searched their applicant tracking system for this role, how likely is your resume to surface? Useful, as long as you know what it is actually measuring.
What it measures
Overlap. It reads the job description, ranks the keywords and phrases that matter most, and checks how many turn up in your resume. Phrases count for more than single words, because a phrase is a stronger signal. The score is the weighted share of those terms that you cover.
What a good score looks like
The bands are simple. Eighty and up is a strong match, and the resume should clear the keyword screen for that role. Sixty to seventy nine is borderline, so close the biggest gaps before you apply. Under sixty means you are likely getting filtered out before a human looks, and the resume needs a real pass against that specific posting.

What it does not measure
This is the part people miss. A match score says nothing about whether your bullets are well written, whether you are actually a strong fit for the work, or whether your layout is even parseable in the first place. It is a keyword overlap estimate, nothing more. A high score gets you found. It does not get you hired. The interview does that.
How to use it without obsessing
Treat it as a checklist, not a verdict. Close the real gaps it surfaces, run it once more to confirm, then move on. Chasing a perfect 100 by padding in words you cannot defend backfires the instant a recruiter actually reads you. The score finds gaps. It does not grade you.
Know your number. Then beat it.
