Thank-you email after a phone interview: short, specific, sent the same day.
A phone screen is usually run by a recruiter whose job is to decide who moves forward. Your note should be brief, confirm your interest and make the next step easy to schedule.
After a phone or video screen, send a three-sentence thank-you email the same day: thank the person for the call, restate one reason you fit the role in your own words, and offer your availability for the next step. Keep it shorter than a post-interview note, because a screening call is shorter and the reader is often a recruiter handling many candidates.

Subject: Thank you for the call today Hi [Name], Thanks for the call about the [Role] role. Hearing that the team needs someone to [need they mentioned] made me even more interested, since that is what I did at [Company]. I am available for next steps on [two or three time windows]. Best, [Your name]
Hiring manager video call

Phone screen timeline
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Within a few hours | Best moment: the recruiter is still writing up notes. |
| You agreed a next-step date on the call | Mention the date in your note so you both have it in writing. |
| No date was given | Ask once, politely, in the thank-you note; then wait before following up. |
| They said you will hear back in a week | Do not follow up before that week has passed. |
The same message, rewritten
Illustrative example with fictional details.
| Version | Example |
|---|---|
| Weak | Thanks for the call, it was great to chat! |
| Strong | Thanks for the call about the operations analyst role. You mentioned the team is rebuilding its weekly reporting, which is the project I led last quarter, so I am keen to talk more. |
Why it matters: A recruiter may speak to many candidates in one day. The strong version gives them one concrete reason to put you forward, written in a sentence they could paste into their notes.
Mistakes to avoid
- Writing a long note for a 10-minute logistics call.
- Re-negotiating salary in the thank-you email.
- Forgetting to answer something they asked you to send.
- Using a casual tone with a hiring manager because the call felt informal.
