How much unemployment pays in the U.S. Virgin Islands
State law as summarized by DOL, effective July 2026. Amounts are before taxes.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Weekly benefit, minimum | $33 |
| Weekly benefit, maximum | $648 |
| Weeks payable | 13 to 16 weeks |
| Maximum total in a benefit year | Lesser of 1/3 BPW or 16 x WBA |
| Waiting week | 1 week (DOL 2023 table; not re-verified) |
A weekly maximum of $648 is above the U.S. average weekly check of $500.61 paid in April–June 2026; the maximum is a ceiling, and many claimants receive less because the amount follows their past wages.
What claimants in the U.S. Virgin Islands actually received, April–June 2026
State-reported data in DOL's UI Data Summary for the 2nd quarter of 2026. The average weekly check was 71% of the $648 maximum.
| Measure | U.S. Virgin Islands | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Average weekly benefit (a week of total unemployment) | $461.54 | $500.61 |
| Average duration, weeks (weeks paid ÷ first payments) | 14.6 | 15.8 |
| Benefits paid per first payment | $6,458 | $7,486 |
| Exhaustion rate (final payments ÷ first payments six months earlier) | 38.2% | — |
| Initial claims filed | 385 | — |
| First payments made | 185 | — |
How DOL defines these: the average weekly benefit is benefits paid for weeks of total unemployment divided by those weeks; average duration is weeks compensated divided by first payments; the exhaustion rate divides claimants drawing the final payment of their entitlement by first payments, with first payments taken six months earlier to follow the flow of claims. A higher exhaustion rate means more claimants used up their benefits before going back to work.
How the U.S. Virgin Islands calculates your weekly amount
DOL's summary of the U.S. Virgin Islands law: “1/16 HQW”, with a weekly minimum of $33 and a maximum of $648.
Abbreviations DOL uses:
- WBA: weekly benefit amount, the check for one full week of unemployment
- HQ / HQW: high quarter / wages in your highest-paid calendar quarter of the base period
- BP / BPW: base period / total wages in the base period, usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters
- AWW: average weekly wage
- DA / dep: dependents' allowance / dependent
- Qtrs: calendar quarters
Examples from that formula
| Wages in your highest quarter | That is per week (÷ 13) | Formula result | Weekly benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| $4,000 | $308 | $250.00 | $250 |
| $7,500 | $577 | $468.75 | $468 |
| $10,000 | $769 | $625.00 | $625 |
| $15,000 | $1,154 | $937.50 | $648 (capped at the maximum) |
Arithmetic only: the state also checks your total base-period wages, rounding rules and dependents. Only the agency's monetary determination sets your amount.
How long unemployment lasts in the U.S. Virgin Islands
DOL lists 13 to 16 weeks of regular benefits in the U.S. Virgin Islands, depending on your base-period wages. In DOL's April–June 2026 data, the average duration in the U.S. Virgin Islands was 14.6 weeks and the exhaustion rate was 38.2%: about that share of claimants drew their final payment.
This does not include additional weeks of benefits that some states pay under limited circumstances, such as high unemployment, continuation of approved training, or workforce dislocations. See Chapter 4 of the Comparison of State Unemployment Insurance Laws.
Waiting week: DOL's 2023 comparison lists a one-week waiting period in the U.S. Virgin Islands (No waiting period required for new/consecutive benefit year.). It is the latest edition DOL has published; check with the agency, which may have changed it.
Earnings you need to qualify in the U.S. Virgin Islands
DOL's summary: “1½ x HQW and $858 in HQ; or $858 in HQ and 39 x WBA in BP”.
In plain terms, you need enough wages in your base period, usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters. You must also have lost the job through no fault of your own (rules for quitting and firing differ by state), be able and available to work, and look for work each week you claim.
If you work part time while claiming
Earnings disregarded (DOL): “25% in excess of $15”. Earnings up to this amount don't reduce your weekly benefit; earnings above it reduce it, and you must report all work and pay each week you claim.
How to file for unemployment in the U.S. Virgin Islands
File with the Virgin Islands Department of Labor at www.vidol.gov (official site, checked Nov 4, 2026). File in the first week you're out of work: benefits are usually counted from the week you file, not the week you lost the job. Have your work history for the last 18 months, employer names and addresses, and your Social Security number ready, then file your weekly certification on time.

How this page is built
Benefit amounts, weeks and qualifying rules come from the U.S. Department of Labor's Significant Provisions of State Unemployment Insurance Laws, effective July 2026, which summarizes each state's law. What claimants actually received comes from DOL's UI Data Summary for April–June 2026 (state-reported). Waiting weeks come from DOL's 2023 Comparison of State Unemployment Insurance Laws, the latest edition: they are shown as of 2023 and not re-verified. We read every source on Nov 4, 2026 and re-read DOL before January 2027, when several states change their maximums. The pay examples are arithmetic from DOL's formula, not a benefit determination.
- Your amount: only the state agency can determine your benefit, after you file. Eligibility also depends on why you lost the job, being able to work, and searching for work.
- Extra weeks: DOL's weeks do not include the additional weeks some states pay in limited circumstances (such as high unemployment or approved training).
- Taxes: unemployment benefits count as taxable income for federal income tax; many states tax them too.
- Legal advice: this page summarizes official tables. For your claim, contact the state unemployment agency.
