Original analysis · 2025 preliminary BLS Occupational Requirements Survey

Telework available vs. teleworked: two BLS measures, by occupational group.

For each occupational group: the share of workers whose job permits telework (ORS 2025, preliminary) and, separately, the share of people at work who actually teleworked in one week (CPS, September 2026).

Updated Oct 30, 2026 · Data: BLS ORS 2025 (preliminary) · BLS CPS Sept 2026 · BLS OEWS May 2025
Key finding

Computer and mathematical occupations have the highest telework availability: BLS estimates 62.8% of workers had the ability to telework (ORS 2025, preliminary). In the CPS, 63.7% of people at work in that group teleworked in September 2026. Transportation and material moving occupations are lowest at less than 0.5% available. The two surveys measure different things and are shown side by side, not combined.

Data Where BLS cannot publish an exact value it publishes a range, shown here in words (for example “less than 0.5%” or “more than 99.5%”). Ranges are BLS’s one-sided 90% confidence bounds; TryHired never converts them to a single number. For sorting only, a range is placed at its bound.

How this page is built

ORS: percent of workers whose job had the ability to telework (the job permits regularly performing the critical job function from home for an agreed-upon part of the schedule), 2018 SOC major groups, 2025 preliminary estimates. CPS: people who teleworked or worked at home for pay at any time in the reference week as a percent of people at work, by occupation of main job (CPS groups matched to the same SOC major groups by name), not seasonally adjusted. These are group-level figures and do not describe any single occupation. No causal claims: these are descriptive estimates. Data status: BLS publishes these as preliminary estimates: the aggregate of two annual samples collected between August 2023 and July 2025, part of the third ORS wave. Values may change when the full wave is final. BLS advises against comparing them with earlier ORS releases. Pay: BLS OEWS May 2025 national median for the same SOC code (not published separately for some ORS occupations). Outlook: BLS Employment Projections 2025–35. BLS data are in the public domain.

What this page can't tell you
  • Whether a specific employer offers it: ORS estimates describe workers in an occupation nationally, not any one job opening.
  • Health, disability or medical suitability: these are job requirements, not advice about whether a job suits a medical condition.
  • Final values: the 2025 estimates are preliminary and may change when BLS completes the third wave.
