Pay and pressure: across 609 occupations, higher pay is only weakly linked to more measured pressure
Across 609 U.S. occupations, higher-paying jobs score only slightly higher on TryHired's measured pressure level, and occupations at the same pay level differ from each other more than the pay levels differ from one another.
What the data shows
Data Each finding is computed from the CSV below; the exact computation is in findings.json.
- Across 609 U.S. occupations, higher median pay is only weakly associated with higher measured work pressure: the Spearman rank correlation is 0.11 (95% bootstrap interval 0.02 to 0.19), using TryHired's pressure level built from four O*NET 31.0 work-context ratings and BLS OEWS May 2025 wages.S2-F1
- The median pressure level of each fifth of occupations by pay falls between 3.03 and 3.23 on O*NET's 1-to-5 scale, a spread of 0.20 points (O*NET 31.0 work context; OEWS May 2025).S2-F2
- Within every pay fifth, the middle half of occupations spans at least 0.38 points of pressure level, more than the 0.20-point spread between the medians of the five pay fifths (O*NET 31.0 work context; OEWS May 2025).S2-F3
- 45% of occupations in the lowest-paid fifth have a pressure level below 3.0, compared with 31% in the highest-paid fifth (O*NET 31.0 work context; OEWS May 2025).S2-F4
- The four ratings relate to pay differently: across the same 609 occupations, the rank correlation with median pay is 0.13 for consequence of error, 0.07 for time pressure, 0.15 for conflict situations and -0.09 for dealing with unpleasant or angry people (O*NET 31.0; OEWS May 2025).S2-F5
- Occupations with a pressure level of 3.5 or higher appear in every pay fifth: 18 in the lowest-paid fifth and 39 in the highest-paid fifth, out of 140 such occupations (O*NET 31.0; OEWS May 2025).S2-F6

How this analysis was built
Data
Population: O*NET 31.0 base occupations (.00 codes) with all four work-context ratings, a national OEWS May 2025 median annual wage and OEWS employment of at least 10,000 (609 occupations).
Pressure level is TryHired's published four-factor measure from Sprint 008: the mean of Time Pressure (4.C.3.d.1), Consequence of Error (4.C.3.a.1), Conflict Situations (4.C.1.d.1), Dealing With Unpleasant, Angry, or Discourteous People (4.C.1.d.2), each rated 1 to 5 by O*NET. It describes the work in an occupation; it is not stress, happiness or wellbeing, and it is not a test.
Missing data: occupations with any of the four ratings missing or suppressed by O*NET ('Recommend Suppress') are excluded, as are occupations without a published national median wage or with fewer than 10,000 jobs.
Pay fifths: the occupations analysed are split into five groups of about equal size by national median wage (lowest empirical quantile cut points).
Interval: 95% percentile bootstrap over occupations, 1,000 resamples with a fixed seed (15).

What a rank correlation means
Spearman's rank correlation compares the order of occupations on two measures, from -1 to 1. 0 means no consistent ordering. A value near 0.1 means that knowing an occupation's pay rank tells you very little about its pressure rank: high-pressure and low-pressure occupations exist at every pay level.
Limitations
- O*NET ratings describe occupations, not individual jobs, employers or people.
- Pressure level is four measured work-context ratings. It is not stress or wellbeing and does not measure how anyone feels at work.
- O*NET ratings were collected between 2005 and 2026; occupations were surveyed in different years.
- Pay is the national median for wage and salary workers and excludes the self-employed.
- This is an observational pattern across occupations. It does not identify why the pattern exists.
