Metro pay spread: how much the same job's pay differs across U.S. metro areas
For the typical occupation, the median wage in a high-paying metro area is 36% above the median in a low-paying one, across 318 occupations, each measured in 20 to 392 of 393 metro areas (BLS OEWS May 2025). Wages are nominal and not adjusted for cost of living.
What the data shows
Data Each finding is computed from the CSV below; the exact computation is in findings.json.
- Across 318 occupations with reliable estimates in at least 20 metro areas, the typical occupation's median wage in a high-paying metro (90th percentile of metros) is 36% above its median in a low-paying metro (10th percentile): a metro pay spread of 1.36. For the middle half of occupations the spread runs from 1.29 to 1.50 (BLS OEWS May 2025; nominal wages, not adjusted for cost of living).M-F1
- In dollars, the typical gap between the 90th- and 10th-percentile metro median annual wages of the same occupation is $20,023, across the same 318 occupations. It is a gap between metro medians, not any worker's earnings (BLS OEWS May 2025; nominal wages, not adjusted for cost of living).M-F2
- 78 of the 318 occupations have a metro pay spread of 1.5 or more, meaning the high-paying-metro median is at least 50% above the low-paying-metro median; 10 have a spread below 1.2 (BLS OEWS May 2025; nominal wages, not adjusted for cost of living).M-F3
- Firefighters show the widest metro pay spread of the 318 occupations: the 90th-percentile metro median annual wage ($81,488) is 2.17 times the 10th-percentile metro median ($37,552), across 117 metro areas (BLS OEWS May 2025; nominal wages, not adjusted for cost of living). Caveat: OEWS turns firefighters' hourly rates into annual pay at 2,080 hours, while firefighter shift schedules and the way departments set hourly rates differ, so part of this spread may reflect how pay is recorded rather than pay levels.M-F4
- The next two widest spreads belong to tipped occupations, bartenders (2.13) and waiters and waitresses (2.08). OEWS wages include tips, so for these jobs the spread covers reported tip income as well as base pay (BLS OEWS May 2025).M-F5
- The three narrowest spreads belong to the three U.S. Postal Service occupations in the data: postal service clerks at 1.06, mail sorters and processors at 1.09 and mail carriers at 1.09 (BLS OEWS May 2025; nominal wages, not adjusted for cost of living).M-F6
- For scale, not as a separate result: across the same 318 occupations, the national 90th-to-10th-percentile wage ratio among individual workers has a median of 2.19, against a median metro pay spread of 1.36. The two ratios measure different things (workers versus metro medians), so a wider within-occupation ratio is expected (BLS OEWS May 2025; nominal wages, not adjusted for cost of living).M-F7
- Among occupational groups with at least 10 occupations in the study, protective service occupations have the widest typical spread, a median of 1.60 across 12 occupations, and production occupations the narrowest, a median of 1.28 across 27 (BLS OEWS May 2025; nominal wages, not adjusted for cost of living).M-F8
- The typical spread holds when the minimum number of metros changes: requiring at least 10 reliable metros (389 occupations) gives a median spread of 1.36, and at least 30 (268 occupations) gives 1.35, against 1.36 at the headline minimum of 20 (BLS OEWS May 2025; nominal wages, not adjusted for cost of living).M-F9
- Other method choices barely move it either: leaving out Puerto Rico's metro areas gives a median spread of 1.35, leaving out the 9 tipped occupations gives 1.35, and a stricter reliability gate (mean-wage PRSE of 5% or less and employment PRSE of 10% or less, 251 occupations) gives 1.34, against 1.36 (BLS OEWS May 2025; nominal wages, not adjusted for cost of living).M-F10
How to read the spread: a spread of 1.36 means the 90th-percentile metro median is 36% above the 10th-percentile metro median for the same occupation. A metro is in the comparison only when its estimate passes the reliability rule. All wages are nominal: no cost-of-living adjustment.

How this analysis was built
Data
Question: for the same occupation, how much do median wages differ between a high-paying and a low-paying U.S. metro area? Data: BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025, metropolitan-area estimates, cross-industry, all ownerships (824 detailed occupations; a universe of 393 metro areas, of which no single occupation has reliable estimates in more than 392).
Population: every detailed occupation with at least 20 metro estimates that pass the reliability rule, excluding 'All Other' residual groups and occupations with a top-coded median in an otherwise reliable metro (318 occupations, 31,323 reliable metro cells).
Source check: the raw BLS file is re-read on every build and compared with TryHired's ingest for every detailed metro cell and every field used; factory ingest identical to the BLS file for every detailed metro cell and every field used (141,015 cells). The raw national file is checked the same way for the national median, 10th and 90th percentile (830 occupations).

The spread, defined exactly
spread = P90 / P10 of the occupation's reliable metro annual medians (each metro counted once)
P(p): sort the n medians x[0] ≤ … ≤ x[n−1]; h = (n − 1)·p; P = x[⌊h⌋] + (h − ⌊h⌋)·(x[⌊h⌋+1] − x[⌊h⌋]) (type 7; Excel PERCENTILE.INC)
Across occupations, the median and middle half of the spreads use the same definition.
Audit decisions
Every choice that could change the result, what TryHired decided, why, and what it does to the numbers.
| Decision | What the study does | Why | Effect, measured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reliability threshold | Unchanged: the frozen S011 rule (families_metro.reliable): 500+ jobs in the metro, employment PRSE ≤ 20%, mean-wage PRSE ≤ 10%, a published numeric annual median, and a non-degenerate distribution (median differs from the 25th percentile, and not equal to both the 75th and 90th). | It is the rule every TryHired metro ranking already uses; changing it for one study would make the study disagree with the metro pages. | 34,594 of 141,015 detailed metro cells pass. First failing test for the rest: fewer than 500 jobs in the metro (or employment not published): 103,919; employment PRSE above 20% (or not published): 1,693; degenerate distribution (median equals the 25th percentile, or the 75th and 90th): 457; mean-wage PRSE above 10% (or not published): 333; hourly wages only (no annual median published): 17; annual median top-coded ('#', $239,200 or more): 2. |
| Wage metric | The OEWS annual median wage (A_MEDIAN), as published. Hourly-only occupations (BLS publishes no annual wage: HOURLY = TRUE) are excluded, not annualized. Annual-only occupations (ANNUAL = TRUE, such as teachers) use the published annual median. For all other occupations, OEWS annual wages are the hourly wage times 2,080 hours, so they describe pay rates, not hours worked or annual earnings. | The median is less sensitive to a few very high earners than the mean. BLS publishes hourly-only wages for occupations that are typically not year-round, full-time, so multiplying by 2,080 hours would overstate their annual pay. | 262 hourly-only cells, all in 5 occupations (Actors, Dancers, Musicians and Singers, Disc Jockeys, Except Radio and Entertainers and Performers, Sports and Related Workers, All Other), excluded. 1,515 reliable annual-only cells in 15 headline occupations kept. |
| Reference year | May 2025 only: metro and national figures come from the same OEWS May 2025 release; no other year is mixed in. | Wages change over time; mixing releases would add a time gap to the place gap. OEWS May 2025 estimates pool six semiannual survey panels (November 2022 to May 2025), with BLS updating earlier panels' wages to the May 2025 reference period. | One release, one reference period. |
| Metro definitions | The 393 metropolitan statistical areas in the OEWS May 2025 file, delineated by OMB Bulletin 23-01 and read through TryHired's frozen geography contract (geo.py). Cross-state metros are always named with every state they span. Nonmetropolitan areas are out of scope. | Metro areas are whole labor markets (a central city and its surrounding counties), not city limits. Listing every state avoids presenting, for example, Kansas City, MO-KS as a Missouri-only figure. | 387 metros in the 50 states and DC plus 6 in Puerto Rico; 43 span more than one state. 393 metros (including 43 cross-state metros) have at least one reliable cell in the headline. |
| Spread across metros (percentile method) | For each occupation: the 90th percentile of its reliable metro medians divided by the 10th percentile (P90/P10), with each metro counted once (unweighted). Percentiles use linear interpolation (Hyndman-Fan type 7, the same as Excel PERCENTILE.INC): sort the n medians x[0..n−1], h = (n−1)p, P = x[⌊h⌋] + (h − ⌊h⌋)(x[⌊h⌋+1] − x[⌊h⌋]). The highest and lowest metro (max/min) are shown as context only. | P90/P10 describes the spread between a high-paying and a low-paying metro without letting the single most extreme metro set the number. Counting metros equally makes this a spread across places, not across workers. | Median spread 1.36 across 318 occupations; the floor-index percentile gives 1.35 (sensitivity table). |
| Top-coded wages | BLS publishes '#' for annual wages of $239,200 or more. A '#' median is never treated as a number and never enters a ratio. If any metro that would otherwise pass the reliability rule has a '#' median, the occupation is excluded: its highest-paying metros would be silently missing and its spread understated. | A ratio with a censored top would be wrong in one direction only. | 208 top-coded median cells in 19 occupations; excluded from the headline for this reason: Physicians, All Other. Top-coded upper percentiles inside a metro (P75, P90) do not enter the metric. |
| Estimate reliability (PRSE) | Gate on BLS's published percent relative standard errors (PRSE): mean-wage PRSE ≤ 10% and employment PRSE ≤ 20%. For OEWS these are model-based error measures, not classical sampling errors. BLS publishes no error measure for the median, so the mean-wage PRSE is used as a reliability proxy for the median. A stricter gate (MEAN_PRSE ≤ 5% and EMP_PRSE ≤ 10%) is run as a sensitivity. | A cell's mean and median are estimated from the same establishments and the same wage reports, so a cell with an imprecise mean is unlikely to have a precise median. The proxy is imperfect, so the stricter gate is also reported. Estimation error in metro medians widens any measured spread and cannot be removed without a median error measure. | Strict gate: 251 occupations, median spread 1.34 (headline 1.36). |
| Minimum metros per occupation | At least 20 reliable metros. Sensitivity at 10 and 30. | With fewer metros, the 10th and 90th percentiles rest on one or two metros each. | 10+: 389 occupations, median 1.36; 30+: 268 occupations, median 1.35. |
| Outliers | No metro is dropped as an outlier and no value is winsorized. The P90/P10 ratio already sets aside the top and bottom tenth of metros; the max/min ratio is reported as context and never used in a finding about the typical spread. | Dropping metros by judgment would make the result depend on the analyst. | Median max/min ratio across the 318 occupations: 2.16, against a median P90/P10 of 1.36. |
| Tipped occupations | Flagged, kept. OEWS wages include tips. A reviewed list of 16 occupations where tips are customary (for example bartenders, waiters and waitresses, hairdressers) is flagged in the CSV and the tables. | For these jobs, the spread includes reported tip income as well as base pay, which a reader should know when comparing them with other occupations. | 9 tipped occupations in the headline; removing them gives a median spread of 1.35. |
| 'All Other' residual groups | Excluded from the headline, kept in the CSV with the flag and their spreads. | An 'All Other' code is a catch-all for jobs without their own SOC code; which jobs fill it can differ from metro to metro, so its spread can reflect a different mix of jobs rather than different pay for the same job. | 21 'All Other' occupations have 20+ reliable metros. 20 are excluded only for this reason; Physicians, All Other is also top-coded and stays out in every variant. Including the 20 gives a median spread of 1.37. |
| Postal Service occupations as a contrast | Kept and flagged as a contrast group: postal service clerks, mail carriers, and mail sorters and processors (the three U.S. Postal Service occupations in the SOC). | Kept as a contrast group; no finding depends on why their spread is narrow. Mail carriers (43-5052) combine city and rural carriers in one OEWS occupation. | They are the three narrowest spreads in the study (finding M-F6). |
| Annualized pay and work schedules | OEWS annual wages are used as published. For occupations that are not annual-only, BLS computes them as the hourly rate times 2,080 hours. Where this matters for a finding, the finding says so (M-F4). | Occupations whose schedules differ from a 40-hour week can show annual figures that track how hourly rates are set rather than yearly pay. Firefighters are the clearest case in this study: the hourly medians behind their annual figures range from $15.99 to $73.12 across reliable metros, so part of their spread may reflect how hourly rates are set. | Firefighters: the five lowest-paying of 117 reliable metros have hourly medians of $15.99 to $17.47 (lowest: Baton Rouge, LA, $15.99); the five highest-paying have $47.14 to $73.12 (highest: San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA, $73.12). Each annual median here equals the hourly median times 2,080 (within rounding). |
| Puerto Rico | Kept: the 6 Puerto Rico metros are metropolitan statistical areas in the OEWS file. Removed as a sensitivity. | BLS publishes them as metro areas on the same basis; the study reports the 50-states-and-DC result as well. | Removing them: median spread 1.35. |
| Cost of living | None. Every wage is nominal (current U.S. dollars, May 2025) and is not adjusted for prices or cost of living. | A metro pay spread is not a measure of living standards; a higher-paying metro can also have higher prices. TryHired publishes BEA price levels separately and never combines them with these figures here. | No adjusted figures anywhere in this package. |
| Language | Pattern only. The study describes how pay differs across metros; it does not say why. | OEWS is a survey of employers, not an experiment; it cannot identify the reasons metros differ. | Every page, finding and summary is linted so that no sentence claims a reason for the pattern. |
Sensitivity
The headline median spread is 1.36. Every alternative below stays within 0.03 of it; the build fails if one does not.
| Variant | Occupations | Median spread | Middle half | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Headline: 20+ reliable metros, frozen reliability rule | 318 | 1.36 | 1.29 to 1.50 | as published |
| Minimum 10 reliable metros | 389 | 1.36 | 1.29 to 1.51 | |
| Minimum 30 reliable metros | 268 | 1.35 | 1.30 to 1.47 | |
| 'All Other' residual groups included | 338 | 1.37 | 1.30 to 1.51 | 20 of the 21 'All Other' groups with 20+ reliable metros; Physicians, All Other stays out as top-coded |
| Puerto Rico metros removed | 317 | 1.35 | 1.29 to 1.49 | |
| Tipped occupations removed | 309 | 1.35 | 1.29 to 1.49 | |
| Strict reliability gate (MEAN_PRSE ≤ 5% and EMP_PRSE ≤ 10%) | 251 | 1.34 | 1.29 to 1.47 | |
| Floor-index percentile x[int(p(n−1))] instead of linear interpolation | 318 | 1.35 | 1.29 to 1.50 | the S017 feasibility's implied method |
Reconciliation with the preliminary feasibility check
A preliminary Sprint 017 check reported 340 occupations, a median spread of 1.3555 and a middle half of 1.293 to 1.498. Its per-occupation ratios reproduce exactly (13 of 13 (floor-index percentile x[int(p(n-1))])). Its median and middle half do not: applying its own floor-index percentile to its own 340 rows gives 1.3636 (1.293 to 1.501), and its script was not kept. From its 340 rows to this study's 318:
| Step | Occupations |
|---|---|
| Preliminary count | 340 |
| of which detailed occupations | 339 |
| of which the All Occupations total (00-0000) | 1 |
| Removed: the All Occupations total (not an occupation; the only aggregate row) | -1 |
| Removed: 'All Other' residual groups | -20 |
| Removed: Physicians, All Other (an 'All Other' group that is also top-coded in 1 otherwise reliable metro; the preliminary widest at 2.57) | -1 |
| Headline | 318 |
Why the widest occupation changed: the preliminary widest, Physicians, All Other (2.57), is out of the headline as an 'All Other' group that also has a top-coded median in an otherwise reliable metro. Firefighters, second in the preliminary list (2.172 with its percentile), are the widest here (2.17). This study supersedes the preliminary check: it uses the linear-interpolation percentile defined above and the exclusions in the audit table, which give a median of 1.36.
Limitations
- Wages are nominal and not adjusted for prices or cost of living; a higher-paying metro is not necessarily a better-off one.
- OEWS covers wage and salary workers; it excludes the self-employed and volunteers. The median describes the middle worker in a metro, not any one employer or job offer.
- Except for annual-only occupations such as teachers, OEWS annual wages are hourly rates times 2,080 hours: they say nothing about part-time work, overtime or annual earnings.
- Metro medians carry estimation error. BLS publishes no error measure for the median, so the gate relies on the mean-wage PRSE (a model-based measure) as a proxy and cannot remove that error.
- Each occupation's spread is measured over its own set of reliable metros, from 20 to 392 metros in the headline. Occupations measured mostly in large metros and occupations measured almost nationwide are compared directly, so the widest and narrowest rankings compare spreads taken over different sets of places.
- A metro is a whole metropolitan statistical area, not city limits. Cross-state metros are named with every state they span.
- Occupations differ in how many metros pass the reliability rule; an occupation concentrated in a few metros may not appear.
- This is a description of a pattern across places. It does not identify why pay differs between metros.
